Kling 4 release date: where things stand

Kling 4.0 is the next generation of Kling's video models. This page tracks what is actually known about its release — not rumours — and what you can do now so the switch costs you nothing. We update it when the status changes; the date at the top shows the last review.

Status as of October 2026

Kling 4.0 is in early access. Access is granted by application rather than open to everyone, and API providers such as fal.ai list it as early access. We have not seen an official date for general availability of the API, and we do not quote unconfirmed dates.

Until it opens, Kling 3.0 Omni remains the strongest generally available Kling model for reference-based video, and it is what RefVid runs on today.

What usually happens at a Kling release

Previous Kling generations followed a familiar pattern: the model first appeared in Kling's own app, often for paying members, then reached the API through partners some time later, sometimes starting with a subset of features such as text-to-video before image or reference modes. Pricing per second of video was published with API availability.

That history is a pattern, not a promise. If you build a workflow that assumes a specific date or a specific feature on day one, you will be rebuilding it later.

What Kling 4 is expected to change for reference video

The interesting part for consistent characters and products is the Omni reference mode: several images and clips of a subject passed in together, with the model keeping that subject intact in a new scene. Each Kling generation has improved how faithfully references are kept, how long clips can run, and how well motion holds up. We will publish concrete comparisons on this site once we can run the same references through Kling 3.0 Omni and Kling 4.0 side by side — not before.

How to be ready on day one

Prepare your references now. The work that matters most — choosing three to ten good images of each character or product, with clean lighting and the main angles covered — is the same for Kling 3.0 Omni and Kling 4.0. Good references made today pay off immediately and again at the switch.

Keep references separate from prompts. If the character lives in a fixed set of images and the prompt only describes the scene, moving to a new model is a matter of re-running the same scenes, not rewriting them.

Avoid lock-in to a single model's limits. Kling Omni takes up to ten reference images; Veo 3.1's reference mode takes three. A setup that can feed the same asset to different models lets you use whichever is best for a given shot.

How RefVid handles the switch

RefVid stores each character or product as an asset with its references. Generation runs on Kling 3.0 Omni through fal.ai today; when Kling 4.0 is available through the API we change the default model, and your existing assets, prompts and series keep working. You do not need a new account, new uploads or new prompts.

Can I use Kling 4 through an API today?
Only through early access. API providers list Kling 4.0 as early access; open API availability has not been announced.
